Smoking legislation has had a positive impact on public health across the country, but has also left a significant minority of people feeling as though their views and opinions have been marginalised. Working closely with an Environmental Health Practitioner we have created a piece designed to represent these views, and spark debate and discussion around the issues of creating SmokeFree public spaces. The piece was recently filmed for a DVD.
'Clearing the Air' focusses on the stories of several smokers who find their lives are impacted by SmokeFree policy and legislation. Rather than preaching to smokers, prosletysing about the positive outcomes of such legislation the piece aims to lay bare the frustration and open antagonism that some of the changes to public policy have resulted in. One of the most fundamental tenets of Forum Theatre is that the audience are the experts, and that we are presenting the world for them to react to and shape. We believe that this is one of the best ways to engage the public in debate and discussion around these issues. The title of the piece is 'Clearing the Air' and we hope that through performances in public spaces, ranging from pubs to community spaces, we are able to create environments in which everyones' viewpoint can be heard and valued. |
