General Medical Council

In June 2009, Dead Earnest opened a conference in London held by the General Medical Council as part of a National Consultation on End of Life Guidance. We worked with Consultants from across the country to make a script that stood up to the scrutiny of the assembled experts but also touched on a number of issues within the guidance. The GMC are now hoping to film the piece in the autumn so that it can be distributed to an even wider audience

Quotes

“Your ability to create a safe and friendly space, which enabled a large group of people of very differing background to engage, contribute and feel valued was extraordinary. Your energy and focus made the whole day work” Dr James Munro, www.patientopinion.org from ‘Every Interaction Counts’ at Rotherham hospital, Oct 2008

Creative Partnerships – Change School away day

June 2009. Head teachers and teachers from schools just joining the CP Change school programme gathered at a hotel just outside Leeds for a two day training event. The first morning, involving a series of Creative challenges, was organised by Dead Earnest. It involved a carousel of nine creative exercises that groups moved around all based on getting the participants to imagine people that might have stayed in the hotel before. Highlights included sifting through the suitcase left at reception and finishing the email correspondence sent by mistake to printer behind reception.

“Really enjoyed these activities - good fun, no pressure to present something straight away. Good thinking and team work. Thought provoking. Thank you!” Head teacher at event

Dvd of work at Southey

Throughout 2009 we have been artists in residence at Southey Green Community Primary School, supported by Creative Partnerships. The project included pirates coming into Yr1 classes, a performance by the Piano man and an after school club for Das and their sons. However the highlight was the extended project based around an Alien Cocoon being found in the school grounds, which was all captured on a dvd. If you are interested in seeing the dvd get in touch with us

“I thought it was absolutely spot on and your energy and ability to elicit contributions from the audience was spell-binding” District Council Diversity Officer

In My Shoes

July has seen us stopping people on the streets to ask them for their stories. This is part of a new City Council initiative to celebrate the diverse voices of the people of Sheffield. We were able to bring our facilitation skills to the fore in engaging people in conversation and asking the right questions to illicit a response.

Creative Sparks is a Dead Earnest initiative to look at how young people interact with Public Space. The idea behind it is to use creative games and exercises to make us look again at public space, to celebrate and reclaim that space for all the communities of Sheffield and to engage young people in the process of imaging and designing the public space of the future.

Dead Earnest has always sought accessible locations for performances and creative events, performing extensively in found spaces, ofices, pubs, cellars and outdoors. Artistic Director, Ashley Barnes, teaches on a Performing Arts degree at Sheffield Hallam University that gets students to question performances space and to locate and utilise site specific locations. Recently Dead Earnest has also been weaving stories about people's sense of place to contribute to the design of public housing in the north of the city (Housing Market Renewal).  For more information about our other activities see main site or contact us.

The first Creative Sparks event will take place in Sheffield City Centre July / Augsut 2008. For more information email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Pupil and Staff Engagement PDF Print E-mail

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

5x5 was a Creative Partnerships funded project based at Abbeydale Grange (secondary) school in Sheffield and employing, as a Creative Partner, Ashley Barnes the Artistic Director of Dead Earnest Theatre. The main focus was the engagement of staff and in particular teachers and Learning Support Assistants (LSAs). It was felt that by engaging staff that there would be a drip-down effect on the engagement of pupils. After much discussion, this was honed down to an idea of getting teachers and pupils to plan and evaluate lessons together. The final research question was deductive in approach and asked: What happens to enjoyment and engagement in learning when students and staff use a creative approach to work together to plan and evaluate lessons?  There were six stages to the project:

  • Recruitment (and engagement)
  • Observation and interviews
  • Peer support
  • Risk taking
  • Reaching our goal
  • Dissemination
